Mayor of Siirt Selim Sadak has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for “making propaganda for an illegal organization”. He was given one additional month for “addressing Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan as Mr.,” in a speech he made on March 21, 2007 in Batman. According to Diyarbakır 4th High Criminal Court, addressing Öcalan as Mr. was considered “Praising crime and criminals” and speaking in Kurdish during a speech was considered “propaganda.”
Kurdish politicians are presenting themselves to court to state that they to want to be arrested as the "crimes" thousand of people have bee detained for are the same they are "committing" everyday.
Diyarbakır mayor opened his house to victims of eartquake
Within the scope of the campaign ‘I am sharing my house with the people of Van’ launched by Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Osman Baydemir has opened his house in Kayapınar district to a family of 15 people.
Lawyers affiliated to the Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales have written to prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressing their concern for "the arrests and threats" directed at lawyers in Turkey. Prof. Bill Bowring, Barrister, BHRC Executive Committee member stressed that those arrests and threats "constitute grave violations of every human rights treaty to which Turkey is a party".
KCK Presidential Council presiden Murat Karayılan has stated in an interview with ANF that "there is no more room left for unilateral steps" and added that "the Kurdish question is the question on the agenda".
Sixteen lawyers have applied to the Asrın Hukuk Bürosu (Century Law Office) to defend imprisoned Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan. The new applications followed the arrest of 33 lawyers. Most of the lawyers jailed last week were indeed defending the Kurdish leader.
