(Written by the Italian delegation in Sirnak, Turkish Kurdistan, for the 2005 Newroz celebration)
The Kurds represent the most numerous people on the planet without a land of their own. The majority of them live in eastern Turkey. Since 1920 they have asked fort the right to exist, and for their language, history and culture to be respected. They still have not obtained this. They have sought dialogue with the state, they have used guns in order to defend themselves, they have proposed a negotiated solution; but Turkey has never listened to them. Turkey has always used violence and acted unmercifully against them. All of us, who know and love the Kurdish people, hoped that with the negotiation for entrance into the EU, Turkey would bring into harmony and put into practice the laws in respect of the minorities. This has not happened. We fear, along with all our Kurdish friends, that in fact nothing has changed, and that the dream to see the Kurd issue resolved remains such. .
