The number of journalists imprisoned worldwide shot up more than 20 percent to its highest level since the mid-1990s, an increase driven largely by widespread jailings across the Middle East and North Africa, the Committee to Protect Journalists has found. In its annual census of imprisoned journalists, CPJ identified 179 writers, editors, and photojournalists behind bars on December 1, an increase of 34 over its 2010 tally.

Saturday Mothers called on government to find murderers
At the 350th traditional sit-in today (International Human Rights Day and 63th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) the Saturday Mothers have called on the government to find the perpetrators of human rights violations and unidentified murders.

Human rights defenders in Turkey are meeting the United Nations' (UN) International Human Rights Day December 10 behind bars. According to data gathered by TIHV (Human Rights Foundation of Turkey), 12 human rights defenders are currently held under arrest for performing their duties. Turkey’s records of human rights has deteriorated in the last year, reveals the TIHV report and in this respect points to the fact that 330 people lost their lives in clashes and over 450 torture applications were made in 2011.
Journalist Mater talked of murders by unknown people
In a presentation about murders by unknown people, journalist Nadire Mater gave voice to the journalist killed in Kurdistan. Mater, co-founder of Bianet and author of best seller "Mehmet's book", made the presentation to the “Commission for Investigating Terror Events and Violation of Right to Life” affiliated to Human Rights Investigation Commission of Parliament.
IHD and families to file complaint on chemical weapons
IHD (Human Rights Association) Diyarbakır Branch and guerrilla families will file a criminal complaint against those responsible for the alleged use of chemical weapons in Kazan Valley where 37 militants of PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) lost their lives on October 22.
Lawyers Mahmut Alınak and Mehmet Ayata were released after being taken into custody on November 22 in an operation which brought to prison over 40 lawyers of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. The two have been taken into custody once again, last night.
