Turkey is a country with an overloaded and fast-changing agenda. Every issue is of existential significance, whether it is the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), the headscarf, the closure of political parties, the new constitution or the Social Security Law. Such a busy agenda naturally generates much debate and discourse, usually heated and controversial. The free discussion of societal problems is fitting, of course, for a democracy and essential for their healthy resolution. The question is whether we are exercising our freedoms, particularly those of expression and of thought, responsibly.
Kurdishaspect 29.03.2008 Celebration of Newroz in Atlanta had us, the organizers, very busy with little details of the programs. However, throughout the preparation time our focus was to make sure that everything was going right and trying our best to give the Kurdish people, and our guests a great time celebrating. Newroz is the Kurdish New year, but many other nationalities celebrate it as well. Like all other nations Kurds celebrate their New Year with picnics, dancing, and partying all filled with joy and love. In Atlanta, we did not short ourselves from partying. In fact we danced passed 1:00 o'clock of that morning. Dancing so hard most of the attendees were soar the next day.

On March 22, the Kurdish community in New England celebrated Newroz, about 400 Kurds and their friends attended the celebration. The Newroz Party was sponsored and organized by New England Kurdish Association-NEKA. Kurds from all parts of Kurdistan attended the celebration.

Eight months after being re-elected in a landslide victory, the Turkish government is locked in a power struggle with what has come to be called the “secularist establishment” – the army, the judiciary and the republican opposition.Ten days ago Abdurrahman Yalcinkaya, Turkey’s chief prosecutor, petitioned the constitutional court for the closure of the ruling Justice and Development party (AKP). He also demanded the banning from political activity for five years of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister, Abdullah Gul, the president, and 69 other senior party figures.

The latest assault on the elected representatives of the Turkish people, as you might have noted, has come in the form of a judiciary coup d'état attempt. Turkey's chief prosecutor filed a case against the incumbent Justice and Development Party (AKP). He wants to close the party down, and ban 71 of its top members, including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdošan, from politics.
