
London (TheKurdistani.com) 03/07/05: The United States expressed "regrets" after an American soldier shot and killed a Kurdish Swiss citizen in Baghdad, a spokesman for the federal foreign affairs department said.
According to the AFP, the US spokesman has offered no explanation for the death of Salah Jmor, 49, a Kurdish businessman who holds the Swiss citizenship.
Dr. Jmor earned the Docteur ès sciences économiques degree (Ph. D.) from the University of Geneva's Graduate Institute of International Studies. He also holds the diplôme supérieur in International Studies from the same institution, a diplôme in the Economy of Development Studies from the Institute of Development Studies in Geneva, and a B. Sc. degree from Sulaimaniah University.
According to Jmor’s family, he was killed by a shot from a three-vehicle American convoy as he was being driven along a highway by his brother, reported AFP. “"We have asked through the intermediation of our embassy in Washington for the State Department and the Pentagon to carry out an investigation," said the Swiss spokesman, Ivo Sieber.
"The State Department has expressed its regrets," he added, but so far has offered no explanation.
The Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey appealed on Suisse Romande radio for the United States "to shed all possible light" on the affair.
Jmor lived near Geneva with his wife and three children. He was a member of the local Socialist party and author of a thesis about Kurdistan at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva.
Jmor has published on a variety of topics, such as international business, European integration, and the role of politics in international business and presented papers at numerous conferences.
Dr. Jmor was the Dean of the Global Trade Institute (GTI), a newly ceated institute on globalization in Geneva. In addition he was a consultant to government, corporate, and other organizations in the Geneva area. He had been a member of the Geneva faculty since 1998.
